PSI vs GPM: What Actually Matters for Cleaning Power

Cleaning power is the product of pressure (PSI) and flow (GPM), not pressure alone. A 4 GPM contractor unit at 3,000 PSI moves 60 percent more water than a 2.5 GPM consumer unit at the same 3,000 PSI and cleans concrete roughly 60 percent faster. This guide explains the math and shows how to read spec sheets from Kärcher, Landa, Hotsy, and General Pump.

The cleaning units arithmetic

The trade uses a simple product called Cleaning Units (CU) to compare pressure washers on a like-for-like basis:

Cleaning Units = PSI × GPM

Higher CU cleans faster. Comparing three machines a homeowner or contractor might buy:

A 4 GPM contractor unit does more than twice the work per minute of a 3,000 PSI 2.5 GPM consumer unit even though both list similar pressure. That is why professional contractors buy the 4 GPM machine.

Why GPM often matters more than PSI

The pressure ejects debris; the flow carries debris away. On heavily loaded substrates (algae mats on siding, black stripes on concrete, mildew biofilm on decks) the water flow is what actually rinses the substrate clean. Turn a high-PSI, low-GPM machine on a mildewed sidewalk and you will see it: the water blasts a narrow stripe but the surrounding surface stays dirty because there is not enough water volume to rinse the loosened debris off.

Once the substrate is chemically pre-treated (soft-washed with SH, for example), high pressure is even less necessary. Almost every professional siding and roof wash runs at low pressure (below 500 PSI) and moderate GPM (2 to 3 GPM downstream). The chemistry does the cleaning; the pressure just carries the rinse.

Where high PSI matters:

  • Concrete surface cleaning with a rotating surface cleaner. The nozzles inside a surface cleaner cover a fixed circular path at a fixed height. Higher PSI at the nozzle means faster cutting of stained concrete.
  • Rust and mineral deposit removal (rare and usually chemistry-assisted).
  • Graffiti removal (usually chemistry-assisted at low pressure, then higher pressure rinse).

How manufacturers specify real machines

Kärcher, Landa, Hotsy, Mi-T-M, and Simpson all publish PSI, GPM, engine size, and pump type on their product spec sheets. Reading them:

What contractor machines look like in the wild

The most common cold-water setup running behind an active US pressure washing route business in 2026 is:

  • Honda GX390 or GX420 gas engine (13 to 14 HP class), published by Honda Engines at engines.honda.com gx series.
  • General Pump TSF2021 or Cat Pumps 66DX40G1I belt-drive triplex pump.
  • 4 GPM at 4,000 PSI unloader-regulated output.
  • Mounted on a skid or trailer with a 100 to 200 gallon buffer tank.

Move up to a hot-water unit (Landa or Hotsy diesel-fired) and you gain the ability to melt grease, break down oil stains on flatwork, and clean commercial kitchen equipment. Trade off: capital cost jumps from about $2,000 for the cold-water setup to $8,000 to $14,000 for a comparable hot-water unit.

Nozzles convert flow into work

The same 4 GPM 4,000 PSI machine can be turned into a stripping wand, a surface cleaner, a soft-wash applicator, or a soap-injection wand by swapping nozzles. Nozzle numbers are printed on the tip and follow the same convention across manufacturers: a 4-digit number where the first two digits are the fan angle in degrees and the second two are the orifice size in a proprietary index that maps to GPM at 4,000 PSI.

Nozzle size (the second two digits) must match the machine flow. A 4.0 orifice (marked "40" in the second half) is right for a 4 GPM machine. Undersize (marked "25") and the pump over-pressures and the unloader dumps; oversize (marked "60") and you lose pressure. Suttner and General Pump publish full nozzle sizing charts.

What contractors actually feel on the wand

Two forces:

  • Reaction force. The wand pushes back on the operator with a force roughly proportional to (GPM × sqrt(PSI)). A 4 GPM 4,000 PSI wand delivers about 20 to 22 lb of reactive force. This is why continuous 8 GPM wanding at height is fatiguing.
  • Impact force at the substrate. Falls off rapidly with distance from the tip. A 40-degree fan at 4,000 PSI held one inch off concrete cuts hard; held six feet away it is a rinse.

Common misconceptions

  1. "5,000 PSI cleans better than 4,000 PSI." If the higher-PSI unit has the same GPM, marginal. If it has lower GPM (which many rental units do), it cleans slower on real jobs.
  2. "Hot water is always better." On grease and oil, yes. On algae and organic biofilm, chemistry (SH-based soft wash) does the work at any temperature.
  3. "Turn the pressure up until it cleans." Damages substrate. Higher pressure blows out grout, chews wood grain, and etches concrete. Use the right nozzle and dwell, not higher pressure.
  4. "Electric is fine for professional work." Electric pressure washers rarely exceed 2 GPM. Fine for occasional deck cleaning. Not for a route business.

What to buy at each tier

Homeowner (occasional use)

2.5 GPM, 2,800 to 3,300 PSI, direct-drive, Honda GC or Kohler engine, from a big-box brand. Around $400 to $700. Consumer duty cycle. Adequate for a few driveway cleanings and deck washes per year.

Side hustle (weekend contractor)

4 GPM, 4,000 PSI, direct-drive from Simpson or Mi-T-M or an equivalent. Honda GX390. Around $1,200 to $1,800. Real cleaning power. Will not last long under daily commercial use.

Full-time contractor

4 to 5.5 GPM, 4,000 PSI, belt-drive from Kärcher / Landa / Hotsy / BE / Pressure Pro. Honda GX390 to GX690 depending on GPM. $2,000 to $4,000 for a cold-water skid, $8,000 to $14,000 for a hot-water diesel-fired unit. Rated for daily continuous work.

Fleet washing / heavy commercial

Rental units and why the specs read low

Home improvement rental counters typically stock 2.5 to 3.0 GPM 3,000 PSI direct-drive units. For occasional homeowner use, that is enough. For a contractor pulling one out of the local Sunbelt or Home Depot rental because the owned unit is at the shop, cleaning throughput drops by roughly 40 percent versus a 4 GPM belt-drive machine. If the job is scoped to the owned machine's productivity and the rental is a temporary substitute, the day may run over. Hot water vs cold water on real jobs

Manufacturer education pages at Landa and Hotsy summarize the effect of temperature on cleaning throughput; the trade rule of thumb is that raising water temperature from 60 F to 180 F roughly doubles cleaning speed on grease, oil, and heavy protein-based contaminants (fleet mud, food-service kitchen grease). On algae, mildew, and general residential biofilm, the effect is much smaller because SH chemistry is doing the work rather than temperature.

Practical implication for a solo residential contractor: a cold-water 4 GPM machine plus downstream chemistry handles more than 90 percent of residential exterior jobs at cold-water speed. Reserve hot-water investment (a $6,000 to $14,000 diesel-fired unit) for the point at which grease, fleet, or commercial kitchen jobs become a real share of revenue.
